Vermont’s Thriving Outdoor Recreation Economy: How It Ties to the MRV Recreation Hub and VOREC Grant

As champions of our local economy and community well-being, it’s important to celebrate and understand the larger forces shaping Vermont’s success. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reveals exciting news: Vermont’s outdoor recreation economy generated a remarkable $2.1 billion in value in 2023, accounting for 4.8% of the state’s GDP. This places Vermont second in the nation for outdoor recreation as a share of GDP, behind only Hawaii. This growth reflects not just statewide trends but also validates the vital work we are doing here in the Mad River Valley, especially through the Mad River Valley Recreation Hub (MRV Rec Hub) supported by the VOREC grant.

The Statewide Picture

  • Outdoor recreation is embedded in Vermont’s identity and drives both tourism and local quality of life.
  • Snow activities, including skiing and snowmobiling, led economic contributions, generating $220 million, up significantly from 2022.
  • Other contributors include RVing, boating, hiking, and biking—all activities we celebrate in the Mad River Valley.
  • Employment in the outdoor sector increased by 4%, with over 16,283 jobs, reflecting the broad economic ripple effect of recreation.

The state’s robust performance is a reminder of the importance of strategic investments like the VOREC-funded initiatives, which not only stimulate local economies but also foster stewardship and resilience in the face of climate change.

The MRV Rec Hub: A Local Model for Success

With the $408,019 VOREC grant, the MRV Recreation Hub represents a transformative project that aligns perfectly with Vermont’s growing outdoor economy. It’s designed to connect, protect, and promote the Valley’s recreational assets, while supporting local businesses and creating a culture of stewardship.

    • Local businesses benefit from increased visibility and foot traffic.
  2. Trailhead Amenities:
    • Dedicated parking and restrooms encourage walkability and make outdoor activities accessible for a wider audience.
  3. Bridge Over Mill Brook:
